About Carbondale Counseling Associates

Carbondale Counseling Associates was founded in 2014 by Katherine Schwartz and Valerie Kasten. CCA is a private group counseling practice that seeks to provide highly individualized services to clients with a wide range of clinical concerns. CCA staff is composed of Counselors, Social Workers, Art Therapists, and Play Therapists. Art Therapy and Play Therapy are innovative and progressive approaches to treatment with a growing body of evidence to support their effectiveness.

Katherine Schwartz

MS, MPS, ATR-BC, RPT, LCPC, NCC

Katherine Schwartz is an Owner/Managing Partner at Carbondale Counseling Associates LLC and the Owner of Southern Illinois Center for Art & Play Therapy LLC. Katherine is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Board Certified Art Therapist, Registered Play Therapist, and National Certified Counselor with 15 years of experience. Katherine specializes in individual counseling, art therapy, and play therapy with children, adolescents, and adults struggling with issues related to addiction and trauma. Katherine also works extensively with singles and couples dealing marital and relationship issues as well mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. Katherine is a client-centered therapist. Her therapeutic approach is to provide support and understanding while the client engages in personal self-exploration and experiences the healing power of creative expression. Katherine works with each individual to help them build on their own strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.

Valerie Kasten

M.Ed., RPT, LPC, LCPC, NCC

Valerie Kasten in an Owner/Managing Partner of Carbondale Counseling Associates LLC and the Owner of Kids’ Cornerstone LLC. She is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Illinois, Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri, Registered Play Therapist, and a National Certified Counselor. She has been in private practice since 1997. Valerie specializes in working with children ages 3 years old and up who have experienced trauma and abuse including physical and sexual abuse. She has testified over 30 times in 12 counties in Illinois, Missouri and Iowa as an expert witness. Valerie also works with children and families struggling with issues related to divorce, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, self-injury, eating disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and ADHD. Valerie utilizes a variety of modalities including expressive arts, sand, play and talk therapy, as well as EMDR.

Rates

$150 per 50-minute session.
A complete fee schedule is available on request. Exact costs and fees vary based on service type and insurance coverage.

Reduced Fee

Reduced fee services are available on a limited basis for those that qualify. Verification of income and family size is required.

Cancellation Policy

If you do not show up for your scheduled therapy appointment, and you have not notified us at least 24 hours in advance, you will be charged a $25 cancelation fee. If you cancel or fail to show up for two consecutive appointments, you will be asked to keep a credit card number on file. If you cancel or fail to show up for three consecutive appointments, services will be terminated and we will refer you to someone else.

Confidentiality & Privacy Policy

The law protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission.
Exceptions include:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse, we are required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, we must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself, we will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, we will take further measures without their permission that are provided to us by law in order to ensure their safety.
Insurance

Services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan. Please check your coverage carefully by asking the following questions:

  • Do I have mental health insurance benefits?
  • What is my deductible and has it been met?
  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?
